A novel by P.K. Vael
The fragile distance between being wanted and being known.
A literary contemporary novel about a brilliant young doctor confronting heartbreak, desire, identity, and the difficult difference between being wanted and being truly known.
The story
Ananya Maheshwari has everything people notice first: beauty, brilliance, a white coat, and a crown. What she does not have is an answer.
When the man she loves retreats into silence, Ananya boards a rain-soaked train from Delhi to Kolkata carrying questions she can no longer avoid. In a cabin shared with three women whose lives have taught them different truths about desire, dignity, power, marriage, and loneliness, she begins to examine every way she has ever been seen, wanted, and chosen.
The journey does not give her a simple definition of love. Instead, it opens a longer reckoning with family expectations, medical work, public visibility, private writing, the ethics of helping others, encounters with ordinary men, and a solitary trek into the Himalayas.
At every turn, Ananya is forced to ask whether being desired is the same as being known, whether care can exist beside harm, and whether love remains real when it does not become a shared life.
Intimate, reflective, and emotionally searching, Love Is Something That Happens to You is a literary contemporary novel about heartbreak, female interiority, identity, choice, and the fragile distance between longing and love. It is for readers drawn to psychologically rich fiction, philosophical questions, and the quiet transformation of a woman learning that another person's choice cannot define her capacity to love.
